Entries and Exits: Arrive Ready, Leave on the Shot

A surprising amount of unnecessary stage time can accumulate before the first shot in a position and after the last one.

A shooter may move quickly across the stage, then arrive at a position, stop, settle the feet, bring the gun up, find the target, find the dot, and finally shoot. On the way out, the opposite can happen: finish the target, pause, confirm the hit, then begin moving.

Those delays may feel small, but they add up. A better goal is to connect movement and shooting so the position does not become a hard stop.

Arrive ready to shoot. Leave as soon as the final shot is complete.

That is the basic idea behind efficient entries and exits.

An Entry Is More Than Getting to the Position

It is easy to think of an entry as simply running to a fault line or shooting box. The real objective is not to get there first. It is to get there ready to produce the next acceptable shot.

If you arrive quickly but need another half second to settle, locate the target, or organize the gun, the entry was not as efficient as it looked.

A strong entry begins before your feet reach the final position. Your eyes can already be locating the target, the gun can be moving toward the shooting position, and your body can begin decelerating so you do not arrive with more momentum than you can control. The entry should connect movement directly to shooting.

Do Not Wait for a Perfect Stance

One of the most important ideas in entry practice is that you do not need to wait until your feet settle into a predetermined position before firing.

If you can see the target, legally engage it, and obtain an acceptable sight picture, you can shoot. The target determines how stable you need to be. A close, open target may allow the first shot while you are still finishing the entry, while a distant partial may require considerably more stability before the sight picture becomes acceptable.

The important point is that the decision comes from the visual information, not from whether your feet have reached some ideal stance. That connects directly to Visual Patience: see what the shot requires, then fire without unnecessary delay.

Let Vision Determine When You Are Ready

A common mistake is creating an automatic sequence of running to the position, stopping, setting the feet, raising the gun, finding the dot, and then shooting. That may be appropriate for a very difficult shot, but it should not automatically happen on every entry.

Instead, let the target tell you when enough stability exists. If the gun is ready, your eyes are on the aiming point, and the sight picture is acceptable, the shot is available. If the dot is still moving too much for the difficulty of the target, continue settling until the visual information is good enough.

The goal is not to shoot before you are ready. The goal is to recognize that ready is primarily a visual condition, not a particular foot position.

Decelerate Before You Arrive

Fast movement into a position is useful only if you can stop it efficiently. Running hard all the way to the fault line and then trying to stop instantly often creates extra steps, excessive body movement, or a correction backward. All of those delay the first shot.

A better entry begins decelerating before the final position. The faster you approach, the earlier that deceleration may need to begin. The exact point depends on your speed, direction, target difficulty, and how much stability the first shot requires.

This is something worth testing rather than reducing to a fixed number of steps. The objective is simple: arrive with enough control that you can shoot as soon as the visual information allows it.

Plan the Feet for the Entire Array

Your foot position should not only support the first target. It should also support everything you intend to shoot from that location and, when practical, the direction you intend to leave next.

If you enter with your feet too narrow or poorly positioned for the next target, you may need another adjustment step before continuing. If the stance makes the final target awkward, you may give away time later in the array.

Consider the entire position when planning the entry. Can you reach all the required targets without unnecessary foot movement? Can you transition through the array comfortably? Can your final body position help set up the exit?

That does not mean every entry needs an exact choreographed foot placement. It means the position should help the stage continue rather than forcing an unnecessary correction.

Do Not Overbuild the Entry

It is possible to make entries too complicated. Shooters sometimes try to create an exact foot pattern for every position: right foot here, left foot there, toe at a certain angle, then shoot.

That may work in a repeatable drill, but stages vary too much for rigid choreography to solve every problem. I would rather understand the principles: get the eyes to the target, prepare the gun, control the deceleration, obtain an acceptable sight picture, and place the feet so the whole array and the exit work.

That gives you a framework that can adapt when the position is different from what you expected.

Shooting Into the Position

Sometimes the best entry includes shooting before you fully arrive.

If a target becomes available before you reach the final position, and the shot is within your ability, you may be able to begin shooting while finishing the movement into the position. This can reduce the delay between movement and shooting.

But it only helps if the trade makes sense. If beginning too early forces you to slow dramatically or turns an easy target into a much harder shot, you may be better off running farther and shooting later.

Exits Begin With the Last Shot

The exit should begin at the earliest useful moment after the final shot, but that does not mean leaving early.

If you start pulling away before the shot is complete, you can drag the gun off target and turn a good shot into a poor one. The visual cue I use is the same one discussed in Transitions: dot lift.

Once the shot breaks and the dot begins to lift, the shooting action is complete and the next action can begin. That may mean shifting your weight, moving the eyes, beginning the first step, or starting a reload during the movement.

The objective is to move no earlier than the completed shot and no later than necessary.

Do Not Wait to Confirm What You Already Know

Another common exit delay happens after the shot. The shooter fires, then remains in the position looking at the target to see where the bullet went.

If you have called the shot and know it was acceptable, there is no reason to remain there waiting for additional confirmation. If the call tells you the shot was not acceptable, respond immediately. If the call was good, leave.

That trust is what allows the exit to begin without hesitation, and trust is built with practice. Repeatedly calling shots and confirming that your visual information matches the actual result gives you the evidence needed to act on what you saw.

Begin the Next Action as Soon as the Previous One Is Complete

An efficient exit often begins with small actions before the body is fully accelerating. Your eyes may move toward the next problem, your weight can begin shifting in the direction of travel, and the support hand may leave the gun for a reload if one is planned during the movement.

None of those actions need to feel dramatic. The principle is simply to begin the next useful action as soon as the previous one is complete. The goal is not to create a violent exit. It is to remove the unnecessary pause between shooting and moving.

The Exit Should Set Up What Comes Next

The fastest first step is not always the best exit.

You need to consider where you are going, whether a reload needs to happen, whether another target becomes available during movement, and which direction gives you the cleanest path to the next shooting problem. An exit that forces you to cross your feet awkwardly or immediately change direction may cost more than it saves.

That is why I like thinking about a position as a complete sequence:

How do I enter? How do I shoot it? How do I leave?

Those three questions belong together.

The Shortest Path Is Not Always the Fastest Entry or Exit

The most direct route to a fault line may look efficient on paper, but it may create a poor shooting position. Likewise, the shortest exit may force you into an awkward turn or a difficult first step.

A slightly different line may allow you to decelerate better on the way in or accelerate harder on the way out. The shortest path is often useful, but it is not automatically the fastest practical solution.

The shortest path is not always the fastest path. What matters is how well the route supports the entry, the shooting position, and the exit.

Practice Entries and Exits Separately

You do not need a full stage to practice these skills.

For an entry drill, begin several yards away from a shooting position. Move aggressively toward the position and fire one or two targets as soon as the sight picture becomes acceptable. Repeat the drill and experiment with when you begin decelerating.

Pay attention to the questions that matter. Are you stopping too early? Are you running too deep and correcting backward? Could the gun be ready sooner? Could you take the first shot before the feet completely settle?

For exits, begin in a shooting position with one or two targets. Fire the final shot and practice initiating movement at dot lift without pulling the gun away early. The goal is not simply faster feet. The goal is a cleaner connection between shooting and movement.

Add the Entire Array

Once the basic entry is working, add multiple targets. This changes the problem because your feet now need to support more than the first shot.

You may discover that the fastest entry for target one creates a poor position for target three. That is valuable information.

Try different entry angles and foot positions. Look for the approach that lets you engage the entire array with the least unnecessary movement while still creating a good exit. Then add the next movement and make the drill continuous.

The exercise begins to resemble the type of problem you actually have to solve in a match.

Measure More Than the Run Time

A timer can help, but look at where the time is changing.

How long does it take from arriving near the position to the first shot? Are you giving away time between the last shot and the first movement step? Does one entry line make the first shot faster but slow the rest of the array? Does another foot position improve the exit?

The fastest total run usually matters most, but the individual components help explain why one solution is better. Those lessons can then become part of your Shooting Knowledge Base.

Practice Different Target Difficulties

Do not practice entries only on close open targets. Those targets are useful because they allow you to learn how early you can begin shooting, but you also need to practice arriving on harder shots.

Use distant targets and partials, and change the direction of movement by entering forward, laterally, and on diagonals. The amount of deceleration and stability required should change with the target.

That variability is part of the skill. The entry should adapt to what you need to see.

The Position Should Never Feel Like a Reset

A good entry and exit make the stage feel continuous.

You move toward the position while preparing to shoot. You fire as soon as the visual information is sufficient, work through the array without unnecessary foot adjustments, and begin the exit as the final shot is completed. There should not be an automatic pause between each of those actions.

Arrive ready to shoot. Leave on the completed shot. Keep the stage moving.

That is the purpose of good entries and exits.
