In practical shooting, it is easy to focus on the obvious places to get faster: shoot faster splits, draw faster, reload faster.
Those things matter, but some of the largest opportunities are often found somewhere else: in the time between shooting actions. A stage contains moments when you are producing points and moments when you are not. You may be moving between positions, transitioning between targets, reloading, entering a position, leaving a position, or simply hesitating before beginning the next action.
Some of that time is necessary. Some of it is not.
The principle is simple:
Minimize the time you are not shooting.
That does not mean rushing every movement or firing before you have an acceptable sight picture. It means reducing unnecessary time between the actions that actually produce points.
Not All Non-Shooting Time Is Wasted Time
A stage may require you to run ten yards before another target becomes available. You cannot eliminate that movement. You may need to reload before the next array, or enter a position before you can see or legally engage a target.
Those are necessary parts of the stage. The opportunity is to perform them efficiently and, whenever possible, overlap them with other actions you already have to perform.
If you have to move anyway, can the reload happen during that movement? If you have to enter a position, can the gun already be prepared to shoot as you arrive? If you are leaving one target for another, can your eyes already be moving to the next aiming point as soon as the previous shot is complete?
The goal is not to eliminate necessary actions. It is to keep them from creating unnecessary additional time.
Do Things Sooner, Not Just Faster
One of the most useful ways to reduce stage time is to stop thinking only about moving faster. Instead, look for opportunities to begin the next action sooner.
A faster reload may save a tenth of a second. Beginning the reload earlier may save much more because you can complete it during movement that was already necessary. Running faster may help, but beginning your exit as the final shot is completed may matter just as much. You can move the gun aggressively between targets, but moving your eyes to the next target sooner may improve the entire transition.
This is a recurring theme throughout shooting:
Do things sooner, not merely faster.
When actions begin at the earliest useful moment and overlap naturally, the stage starts to feel continuous rather than like a series of separate tasks.
Transitions Are Non-Shooting Time
A transition is the time between completing a shot on one target and firing the first shot on another. You are not earning additional points during that interval.
That is why transition improvement can offer such a good return. Saving a small amount of time between targets can add up substantially across an entire stage without requiring you to accept worse hits.
The process we discussed in Transitions is built around reducing that interval: complete the shot, move the eyes, drive the gun, obtain an acceptable sight picture, and fire.
You are not eliminating the transition. You are eliminating unnecessary delay within it. That same idea applies throughout the stage.
Reload While Something Else Is Happening
A standing reload can be expensive because the stage essentially stops while you perform it.
When the stage design allows it, a better option is usually to place the reload during movement that must happen anyway. The practical question is not simply, Where can I reload? It is: Where can I reload with the least effect on shooting and movement?
If you finish an array and have to move to another position, the reload can often begin as you leave. Your legs are covering the distance while your hands perform the reload.
That does not make the reload free. A poorly executed reload can slow the movement, disrupt the next entry, or create a recovery problem. But the goal is to reduce how much additional stage time the reload requires.
This is why a reload is more than a hand skill. It is part of the movement and stage plan.
Finish the Reload Before You Need the Gun
There is also a difference between performing a reload during movement and carrying the reload all the way into the next position.
If you are still seating the magazine as you arrive, the reload may now delay the first shot. You saved some time during the run but gave it back at the entry.
For many situations, completing the reload earlier in the movement gives you time to recover from a mistake and lets the final portion of the movement focus on entering the next position ready to shoot. Other situations may favor a reload later in the run, which is something worth testing in practice rather than turning into a universal rule.
The larger principle remains the same: complete necessary work when it interferes least with scoring.
Entries Can Hide a Lot of Time
Many shooters move quickly between positions and then give away time when they arrive.
They reach the shooting area, stop, settle their feet, bring the gun into position, find the target, find the dot, and finally shoot. Those actions may happen one after another, but they do not necessarily need to.
As you approach the position, your eyes can already find the target. The gun can be prepared. Your body can decelerate so that you arrive balanced rather than running past the position and correcting backward.
If the stage allows it and the shot is within your ability, you may even be able to begin shooting before you are completely settled.
A good entry connects movement directly to shooting. You do not want to arrive at the position and then begin preparing to shoot. You want to arrive ready to shoot.
Exits Begin With the Last Shot
The same concept applies when leaving.
A common source of wasted time is completing the final shot, waiting to see what happened, and only then beginning to move. If you have called the shot and know it was acceptable, there is no reason to remain in the position simply to confirm the result.
The shot finishes and the exit begins.
That does not mean leaving before the shot is complete. Doing so can pull the gun away from the target and cost points. The objective is timing: no earlier than the completed shot, using dot lift as the cue, and no later than necessary.
That is the same visual cue we use to initiate a transition. Once the dot lifts, the shot has broken and the next action can begin.
A tenth or two saved on an exit may not seem important until it happens several times during a stage.
Shoot While Moving When It Actually Helps
One obvious way to reduce non-shooting time is to eliminate some of it by shooting during movement.
But shooting on the move is not automatically faster.
If shooting while moving forces you to move so slowly that you would have been better off running aggressively to the next position, you may not have gained anything. If the target difficulty causes poor points or makeup shots, the trade may be even worse.
This is where your Shooting Knowledge Base becomes important. Practice both solutions. Shoot while moving, then run to the position and shoot from there. Compare the time, points, and consistency.
The objective is not to become someone who always shoots on the move. It is to know when shooting on the move actually reduces stage time for you.
Fewer Positions Can Help, but Only if the Shots Make Sense
Another way to reduce non-shooting time is to reduce the number of positions you have to visit. If two arrays can be shot from one location instead of two, you may eliminate an entire movement sequence, entry, and exit.
That can be a major advantage, but fewer positions do not automatically produce the better stage plan. Combining positions may create longer shots, difficult leans, partial targets, or angles that are outside your current ability.
A slightly longer path can sometimes be faster if it lets you move aggressively, shoot easier targets, enter positions better, and leave sooner. The shortest path is not always the fastest practical solution.
The best plan minimizes wasted time without creating a shooting problem that costs more than it saves.
Avoid Hard Stops When You Do Not Need Them
A stage often feels faster when the actions flow together:
Shoot, leave, reload, enter, shoot.
Problems occur when unnecessary stops appear between those actions. Shoot, pause, then move. Move, stop, then reload. Arrive, stop, raise the gun, then shoot.
Each individual delay may be small, but together they make the stage feel segmented.
Look for opportunities to connect actions instead. A well planned stage should link shooting positions, movement, entries, exits, and reloads into one continuous process.
That is what I mean when I talk about flow. Flow is not simply looking smooth. It is reducing places where the stage unnecessarily stops.
Hesitation Is Time Too
Not all lost time is physical. Indecision can be just as expensive.
If you arrive at a position and have to remember which target comes next, the body stops while the brain catches up. If you are uncertain where to reload, you may begin late. If you change your plan at the last moment, you may hesitate while trying to execute something you have not fully rehearsed.
Good stage planning reduces those pauses. Build the plan, rehearse it, commit to it, and then execute.
The more decisions you can make before the timer starts, the fewer decisions you need to make while the clock is running.
Faster Shooting Is Not Always the Best Place to Look
Suppose you are already shooting .18 to .20 second splits on close targets. Reducing those splits another .02 seconds may be possible, but the return may be small and the scoring risk may increase.
Meanwhile, you might be giving away .20 seconds on every exit, .30 seconds entering positions, and another half second because a reload was performed standing still.
Those are often better places to look first.
That is the same reasoning behind the 80/20 Principle. Put more training effort into the areas likely to produce the greatest return.
Speed between the shots can matter just as much as speed during the shots.
Look at the Whole Stage
When reviewing a stage, do not only ask where you shot slowly. Look at everything between the shots.
Ask whether you left immediately after the final shot, whether the reload was placed where it interfered least with movement, whether you arrived ready to shoot, and whether you stopped unnecessarily. Look for positions you could have combined, hesitation caused by an unclear plan, or places where shooting during the entry or exit might have been useful.
These questions can reveal time that is difficult to notice when you only look at split times or raw shooting speed.
A stage is not simply a collection of shots. It is a sequence of shooting and everything required to connect those shots.
Make the Stage Continuous
The long term goal is not to perform every individual skill at maximum speed. It is to make the entire stage efficient.
Complete the shot and leave. Move your eyes and transition. Perform the reload while movement is already happening. Arrive ready to shoot. Shoot during movement when it makes sense. Eliminate positions when your skill allows it. Rehearse the plan well enough that hesitation disappears.
None of those things alone may transform a stage, but together they can.
Minimize the time you are not shooting.
The less unnecessary time you place between scoring actions, the more efficiently you can move through the stage while still producing the points you need.
