Known Standards: Use Repeatable Tests to Measure Improvement

Improvement is difficult to measure if the test keeps changing.

One practice session may include transitions at seven yards. The next may involve movement, partial targets, or a completely different stage. All of that training may be useful, but if the conditions continually change, it can be difficult to determine whether a specific skill has actually improved.

That is where known standards become valuable. A classifier, standardized drill, or other repeatable shooting problem gives you something you can return to over time. The setup, scoring method, and objective remain relatively consistent, which allows your performance to become the variable.

A standard gives you a consistent question. Your training should improve the answer.

A Standard Is a Benchmark, Not the Goal

A known standard gives you a reference point.

Maybe it is a USPSA classifier. Maybe it is a drill with a specific target arrangement, distance, start position, and scoring method. What matters is that you can reproduce the problem closely enough to compare one performance with another.

The standard does not need to represent everything required to be a good competitive shooter. No single classifier or drill can measure stage planning, movement, difficult positions, visual patience, reloads, transitions, and every other skill at once. That is not its purpose.

The purpose is to establish a benchmark.

If you perform the same test today and again several months from now, the comparison can tell you something about whether the skills involved in that test have improved.

Repeatability Makes the Information Useful

The more consistent the setup, the more useful the comparison becomes.

If the target distances change, the start position changes, or the scoring method changes, you may still have a useful practice session, but you are no longer making the same comparison.

That is why I like known standards. The dimensions are already established, the shooting problem is already defined, and in the case of a classifier, thousands of other shooters may also have performed the same problem, giving you an additional reference point.

You do not have to invent a new test every time you want to measure progress. You can return to a known one.

Testing and Training Are Different

One of the most important distinctions is the difference between testing a skill and training a skill.

A test tells you what you can currently do. Training is where you try to change what you can do.

Suppose a classifier exposes a slow reload. Repeating the entire classifier twenty more times may eventually improve the score, but that does not necessarily make it the best way to improve the reload.

A better approach may be to isolate the reload in dry fire and live fire, work on the specific problem, integrate it back into more complex shooting, and then return to the classifier later.

The classifier identified the limitation, practice develops the solution, and the classifier can later help determine whether that improvement transferred.

Do Not Practice Only the Test

There is a danger in becoming too focused on a specific standard.

If you repeat the exact same classifier often enough, you become very good at that classifier. You know the target order, the transitions, the timing, and exactly what the run should feel like.

Some of that improvement represents real skill, while some may simply reflect familiarity with the test. That distinction matters because the goal is broader performance, not just mastery of one shooting problem.

If your objective is to become a better competitive shooter, the goal is not simply to memorize a small collection of standardized stages. The goal is to develop skills that transfer to stages you have never seen before.

Use the standard to measure performance, then train the underlying skills broadly enough that the improvement belongs to you, not just to the drill.

Let the Standard Expose the Limiting Factor

The final score is useful, but the components often tell you more.

Maybe the draw is competitive but the transitions are slow. Perhaps the speed is good but points are being lost because the sight picture is not sufficient for the target difficulty. A reload may be adding time, or the movement between positions may be costing more than the shooting.

That is where a known standard becomes more than a score. It becomes a diagnostic tool.

Instead of asking only, What percentage did I shoot?, ask What prevented the performance from being better?

Once you identify that limiting factor, you have a potential training priority.

That is where the 80/20 Principle becomes useful. The standard can help identify which limitation is most likely to provide the greatest return from additional training.

Measure the Right Thing

Not every practice objective should be judged by raw time.

If the drill includes scored targets, points matter. A faster run with significantly worse hits may not represent improvement. For many practical shooting problems, hit factor provides a better comparison because it incorporates both points and time.

The exact metric depends on what you are testing.

If you are intentionally working in Speed Mode, you may temporarily care more about discovering a faster movement or shooting pace than about the final scored result.

If you are evaluating Match Mode performance, the points have to count.

The important thing is to know what you are measuring before you begin. Otherwise, it is easy to celebrate an improvement in one number while the overall performance actually got worse.

Establish a Baseline

Before trying to improve a standard, find out where you are now.

That first performance becomes the baseline. It does not need to be impressive. The value of the baseline is that it gives you an honest starting point.

Record enough information that the result means something later. Depending on the test, that might include total time, points, hit factor, individual strings, draw, transitions, reload, or other important components.

Then begin the training process.

Without a baseline, you may feel faster several weeks later, but you have nothing objective to compare that feeling against. Measurement gives the improvement context.

Train the Cause, Not Just the Score

Suppose your baseline shows that a particular classifier is below the level you want.

The temptation is to say, “I need to practice this classifier.”

Maybe.

But first determine why the score is low.

If the issue is the draw, train the draw. If it is a standing reload, train the reload. If transitions are too slow, work on transitions. If the points are poor, determine whether the issue is visual patience, shot calling, trigger control, or another factor.

If the standard contains several of those problems, prioritize them rather than simply running the entire classifier repeatedly and hoping the score improves.

This is the same principle behind Practice With Purpose: know what you are trying to improve before you start accumulating repetitions.

Return to the Standard and Retest

After a period of focused training, return to the original standard.

Now the question becomes whether the work transferred.

Did the reload improve when it was placed back into the full shooting problem? Are the transitions actually faster while maintaining acceptable points? Did the classifier percentage improve?

If so, you have evidence that the training worked.

If not, that is also useful information. Perhaps the skill improved in isolation but has not yet transferred into more complex execution. Maybe the original diagnosis was incomplete. Perhaps another component has now become the limiting factor.

The retest gives you another piece of information, and then the training cycle continues.

Do Not Retest Constantly

A benchmark loses some of its value if every practice session becomes another test.

Testing can tell you whether you improved, but testing itself does not necessarily create the improvement. If you shoot the same standard every day, you may spend more time checking progress than producing it.

Give the training enough time to work.

How long that takes depends on the skill. A small technical adjustment may show improvement quickly. A significant change in movement, visual processing, or overall stage execution may require considerably more repetition.

The exact schedule matters less than the principle:

Train long enough to create a change before repeatedly asking the test to prove that the change occurred.

Use More Than One Standard

One benchmark can be useful, but a collection of standards provides a better picture.

A short stand-and-shoot classifier may reveal a lot about draws, transitions, reloads, and visual speed while telling you very little about movement or stage planning. Another standard may emphasize one-handed shooting. Another may require movement between positions. Another may demand greater accuracy.

Taken together, several known standards can expose different parts of your shooting.

This is one reason I like using classifiers as benchmarks. They are not identical, and different stages place different demands on the shooter.

The objective is not to become a specialist in one test. It is to use different repeatable problems to evaluate different parts of your performance.

Classifiers Are Useful, but They Are Not Everything

USPSA classifiers provide an obvious known standard because they are repeatable and connected to a classification system.

That makes them useful.

They can show whether your performance on defined shooting problems is moving closer to B, A, Master, Grand Master, or whatever level you are pursuing.

But classification is still only one measurement.

A shooter can perform extremely well on classifiers and still have areas that need work in field courses. Stage planning, movement choices, unusual positions, recovery from problems, and many other match skills may not be represented equally in a classifier.

Likewise, a poor classifier does not erase everything else you can do.

Use classification as information. Do not make it your entire identity as a shooter.

Classification Can Be a Goal Without Becoming the Training Program

There is nothing wrong with pursuing a classification goal.

I did.

A defined standard can be highly motivating because the requirement is measurable. You know the level you are trying to reach, and you can compare your current performance with that benchmark.

But the classification goal should help direct the training rather than replace it.

If a classifier exposes a skill that needs work, improve the skill. If another classifier reveals a different limitation, add that information to the picture.

Over time, the classification becomes evidence that a broader set of skills has reached a certain level.

That is more valuable than simply learning how to produce one or two specific scores.

Keep Testing After You Reach the Goal

Reaching a classification does not make the standards useless.

Once the goal changes, the benchmark can still help you evaluate whether you are improving.

Maybe your classification no longer changes, but your execution becomes cleaner. Perhaps the same classifier that once required an exceptional run becomes something you can perform at a high level consistently.

That difference matters.

A best-ever performance tells you what you have demonstrated once. Repeatable performance tells you what you can depend on.

Those are not the same thing, and known standards can help measure both.

Record the Information

A benchmark becomes more valuable when you preserve the results.

Record the date, score, hit factor, relevant component times, and anything else that will help you understand the performance later.

Do not turn the record into a complicated administrative burden. Capture enough information to answer useful questions: What improved? What stayed the same? What became the new limiting factor?

This information belongs naturally in your Shooting Knowledge Base.

Over time, you are building more than a collection of scores. You are building evidence about how your shooting responds to training.

Compare Yourself to Yourself First

Classification percentages and other shooters' scores provide useful external standards.

But the most important comparison during improvement is often your current performance against your previous performance.

Did your reload become more reliable? Are the same transitions faster? Can you maintain the points at a pace that previously caused mistakes? Has a difficult standard become routine?

Those changes may occur before they produce a dramatic difference in classification or match placement.

External standards tell you where your performance sits relative to a larger benchmark. Your own history tells you whether you are moving forward.

Both are useful.

A Best Run and a Dependable Run Tell You Different Things

I like knowing what my best performance looks like.

A great run can reveal capability that you may not yet be producing consistently. It shows you that a particular level of performance is possible.

But I also want to know what I can reproduce.

If one run is dramatically better than the others, it may represent the leading edge of your current ability rather than your normal performance. That is still valuable information.

The best run shows what is possible, while the group of runs shows what is dependable.

As training progresses, I want those two levels to move upward together.

Standards Should Lead Back to Practice

The purpose of measurement is not simply to collect measurements.

The information should eventually affect what you do.

A standard exposes a limiting factor. You identify the solution, train it deliberately, integrate the skill into broader shooting problems, and then return to the standard to see what changed.

That creates a simple cycle:

Test → Diagnose → Train → Retest → Adjust.

The same cycle can continue indefinitely because improvement changes the problem. When one limitation improves, something else may become the next opportunity.

Use the Test, Do Not Worship It

Known standards are valuable because they create consistency.

They provide a benchmark you can return to when the rest of your training changes. They give you evidence about whether practice is producing measurable improvement and help expose the skills that currently limit performance.

But the standard is a tool. The goal is not to become excellent at taking the test. The goal is to become a better shooter.

Use classifiers, drills, and repeatable shooting problems to ask consistent questions about your performance. Then take the answers back into deliberate practice.

A known standard tells you where you are. Deliberate training determines where you go next.
